Integrity – Your #1 Asset

Keep it safe!

Integrity is a word I see often in company values and mission statements and for good reason. If a company doesn?t have integrity, it?s unlikely to succeed long term. Let?s be honest, who really wants to do business with an organisation that can?t be trusted to do the right thing?

In my various leadership roles I understood that integrity must first be displayed by me and then be encouraged at an individual level. It was absolutely essential that my team knew right from wrong. That they could say ?no?, or at least seek clarification, without their own progression being impacted. And they knew that if they acted with integrity they would succeed longer term.

According to Brian Tracy “integrity is a state of mind and is not situational. If you compromise your integrity in small situations with little consequence, then it becomes very easy to compromise on the big situations.” And it?s the little things you compromise that send warning signals to those you deal with and erode the trust you?ve worked hard to build.

Take for instance the recent headlines in the US where FBI Director, James Comey, was questioned after he said the bureau would not recommend charges be filed against Hillary Clinton in the agency?s probe over her email practices as secretary of state. Ted Cruz commented that ?While I have tremendous respect for the dedicated men and women of the FBI, I have serious concerns about the integrity of Director Comey?s decision, and how it threatens the rule of law.?

If you are unsure whether your actions are done with integrity then there?s a strong chance they?re not. Go with your gut, if something doesn?t feel right then it?s probably not.
